My season 2023 ski trip to the alps will be to Val Gardena again, and I will be staying at hotel Antares in Selva Wolkenstein village from Saturday 4th to 11th February 2023. The Val Gardena trip in 2022 was so nice, that I wanted go back there once more. This time with my son Daniel.

- Sella Ronda Green (counter clockwise)
- Sella Ronda Green (counter clockwise), with detour to Marmolada

Geographical names in different languages
It is good to note that places in this region can have up to three geographical names, in each of the three languages spoken here, which are Italian, Ladin and German.
As an example, the valley name Val Gardena is an Italian name, but it is Gherdëina in Ladin and Gröden in German. The biggest town in Val Gardena valley is called Urtijëi in Ladin, St. Ulrich in Gröden in German and Ortisei in Italian. The town at end of the valley is Sëlva in Ladin, Wolkenstein in German and Selva in Italian.
Ladin is the local language of the valleys surrounding the Sella group of mountain peaks, that has been spoken there since ancient times of the Roman empire era. Ladin has apparently developed from Vulgar Latin and is related to Romansch spoken in some cantons of Switzerland and to Friulian spoken in north-eastern Italy. All the mountains, valleys, passes and villages have always had Ladin names.
German language was introduced to the region when it was under the rule of Austrian empire and part of the princely county of Tyrol until 1919. During the Austrian Empire era the Ladins underwent a process of Germanization, especially in 19th century.
As a consequence of the Great War (Grande Guerra) or WW-I the southern part of Tyrol was annexed to Italy in 1919 and thus became South Tyrol. The fascist government of Italy started in 1920’s an Italianization program and all geographical names were converted to Italian names then. Today the region is an “Autonomous Province of South Tyrol”, where all three languages are in active use. Ladin is often preferred in material and signage produced by native locals, whereas Italian is preferred in provincial and national level documents and in English translations made for tourists.
Sella Ronda Green versus Orange
Sella Ronda green, the counter clockwise direction is easier and more relaxed to ski than the orange round, having more blue runs and easy reds. Green direction is usually less crowded. Sella Ronda Orange is more demanding than Green, having some more challenging reds and optional blacks on the way. Orange has less lifts and is often quicker to complete for a good skier. There is a lot distance to cover, so you need to be a fairly good skier in good physical condition to complete the round in one full day. A really fast expert level skier could do the round in 3 hours if no lift queues on the way.
On both directions there are opportunities to make short or longer detours to explore more, if you are a fast skier.
Sella Ronda Green (counterclockwise)
Starting from village of Selva Wolkenstein in Val Gardena valley and returning there, this tour takes you around the Sella group of mountain peaks and across four ski areas: Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Arabba, Alta Badia. The basic Sella Ronda Green route will cross four mountain passes. First you cross the Passo Sella or Sellajoch, ski down to the Val di Fassa valley. Then up and across the Passo Pordoi or Pordoijoch, then down to Arabba village. From Arabba up and across the Passo Campolongo and ski down to Corvara village. From Corvara up and across Passo Gardena or Grödnerjoch. From the top of the Dantercepies ridge you can ski back to Val Gardena valley.
Here is a detailed description of the route. On this round you will be using at least 14 ski lifts, travel 60 km of distance of which more than 30 km downhill. You will do a total of 6000 m of vertical descents and ascents. It will take at least 5 hours and you should start early. If you are fast, then some detours along the route are possible.

Grande Guerra round counter clockwise from Selva Wolkenstein
This is a huge round, like Sella Ronda Green on steroids, and from Selva you can make it only if you start 8:30 sharp and go as fast as possible. There is a good chance of not completing it before lifts start to close and you might end up returning by taxi. The Grande Guerra works better if you stay in Arabba or Corvara. Selva is a bit too far from this route.
See also: https://www.val-gardena.com/en/tours/detail/ski-circuit-grande-guerra-dolomites/
Starting from village of Selva Wolkenstein in Val Gardena valley and returning there, this route requires two bus trips and one horse drawn ride. Grande Guerra round takes you across six ski areas adding Civetta and eastern part of Cortina to the normal Sella Ronda. You also get to ski the skitour Lagazuoi which is hard to access.
You start it same way as doing the Sella Ronda Green route, but from Arabba you head to the Malga Ciapella village. From the Malga Ciapella you take a 20 minute bus ride to Alleghe village. From Alleghe you take ski lifts up and across Cold dei Baldi and Col Fioret, then ski down to Pescul village. Then 20 minute bus ride from Pescul to Fedare. Then ski lifts across the Averau ridge, and you ski down to Passo Falzarego. From Passo Falzarego cable car up to Lagazuoi and ski down to Capanna Alpina hut. From Capanna Alpina it is a rather flat ski track to Armentarola village, but you can take a horse drawn ride to make it easier. From Armentarola you can ski to San Cassiano and take a ski lift up to Alta Badia ski area and get to Corvara village in many different ways. From Corvara up and across Passo Gardena or Grödnerjoch and then back to Selva Wolkenstein.
You should by the bus ticket in advance “GIRO SCIISTICO DELLA GRANDE GUERRA”, 10 EUR.
