My yearly ski trip to the Alps for winter 2024 will be to Val Thorens, time of travel will be 27 Jan – 3 Feb 2024. Val Thorens is part of the “3 Valleys” or “Les Trois Vallees” area, which they advertise as being the largest in the world. There are 600 km of pistes, 175 ski lifts. I have been in this area several times before, but it has been a while since my last trip there, which was 2010 to Meribel, in another valley.
This time I am going with both of the boys Daniel and Matias. Daniel was with me on last year’s 2023 trip to Val Gardena. Both of the boys, the girls and my wife were on my trip 2022 to Zillertal, but now this time it is a boys only trip. We bought an all inclusive package trip from STS Alpresor, the same travel agency I have been using for several years already. Cost of the package was 1907 EUR, including:
- Flights: Helsinki – Turin roundtrip, SAS SK7203, SK7204
- Ski transport on flights
- Bus transport, Turin to Val Thorens
- Accomodation at Residence Tourotel, studio for 3, ski in/out
- Breakfast and lunch
- Ski pass for 6 days at 3 Valles region
- Cancellation insurance
I decided this year to try France for a change, since last few years I have been in Italy and Austria quite a lot. Last time I was in French Alps was the 2019 trip to Tignes with Daniel and Camilla. The timing had to be on this last week of January because in February I have a long scuba diving trip to Indonesia. This is so early in the season that I had to choose a snow-sure location, and Val Thorens with the base at 2300 meters and two peaks above 3200 m is as sure as it gets. At the time of writing this – just two weeks before the trip – it seems I was maybe a bit too cautious because the winter at the Alps has started really well and there is plenty of snow everywhere.
The official resort snow report 15th January 2024:
- 150 cm at base
- 210 cm at top
- last snow 3 cm, snow quality is fresh
- snow altitude 1300 m
- 0 C isotherm at 1750 m
- Val Thorens village: -5 C, wind 11 km/h NW
